Thus, the agency had no choice but to pull up Girls’ Generation’s activities as 8 members earlier than planned, and in the midst of while working out when to announce this, Jessica had posted her words early this morning.
From here on, our agency will continue to support and manage the 8-member Girls’ Generation and Jessica’s individual activities.”

Montpellier flooded, thousands stranded as storms hit southern France

Thousands of people slept in railway stations, airports and schools on Monday night after torrential rain drenched much of the south of France. The streets of the city of Montpellier were flooded and a kayak was spotted rowing alongside the old town.

About 4,000 people were stranded in the Hérault department, which was on red alert Tuesday morning, while the neighbouring Aude, Gard and Pyrénées-Orientale were on orange alert.
The government was set to declare a natural catastrophe in the Hérault, which was worst hit.
After a brief respite, the deluge was expected to start again as rain moved up the coast from Spain.
Hundreds of rail passengers spent the night sleeping in Montpellier’s railway station, some in carriages provided by the rail company, 500 people were stuck overnight in the airport, a concert hall was transformed into a dormitory and about 1,000 students had to sleep their schools and colleges.
The Red Cross and the army supplied camp beds and meals and the more than 1,500 firefighters and police who were mobilised for rescue efforts were called out 1,200 times.
Traffic was brought to a standstill by floods in the city streets as the River Lez burst its bankd on Monday afternoon and one intrepid resident rowed a kayak down a street near the old town.
Rainfall reaching 300mm in some places led to waterlogged soil in much of the area, leading the authorities to maintain the red alert ahead of the expected new downfall.
Ten days ago four people died in nearby Lamalou-les-Bains and another in the Aveyron.

Emma Watson to star opposite Daniel Brühl in political thriller Colonia

The Harry Potter star will play a woman caught up in the Chilean military coup of 1973 in a film directed by Florian Gallenberger
Emma Watson will star opposite Rush’s Daniel Brühl in Colonia, a political thriller set against the backdrop of the Chilean military coup of 1973, reports Variety.
The pair will play Lena and Daniel, a young couple who become wrapped up in the political turmoil surrounding the US-backed coup. Florian Gallenberger, the German director whose highly praised period drama John Rabe won four Lolas at the German film awards in 2009, will take charge of the cameras and write the screenplay with Torsten Wenzel.
Colonia will be one of Watson’s first starring roles since the Harry Potter films, the English actor having largely chosen to take supporting parts since the fantasy saga ended in 2011. She will also take the lead in Alejandro Amenábar’s upcoming thriller Regression, opposite Ethan Hawke.
The synopsis for Gallenberger’s film sees Lena (Watson) forced to join a cult in the Colonia Dignidad area of southern Chile where she believes her partner Daniel (Brühl) has been taken by the secret police. The “Colonia” or colony presents itself as a charitable mission run by lay preacher Paul Schäfer, according to Variety, but in reality hides darker secrets. The story is said to be based on true life events.
Gallenberger is expected to shoot in Luxembourg, Munich, Berlin and South America until the end of the year. It is not yet clear whether the project will mark the film-maker’s feature-length English-language debut following two earlier films in German (John Rabe) and Bengali (2004’s Shadows of Time).

Is it time to worry about the New England Patriots?

The New England Patriots were destroyed on Monday night at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs. A 41-14 rout showed the glaring holes throughout the Patriots lineup. Tom Brady could point a few of those holes out, whenever he’s able to get up off the ground.
The Patriots pulled Brady in the fourth quarter after getting picked of twice and sacked three times. He only completed one pass over 10 yards on the night. Brady was bad. By Brady standards, he was terrible. But this isn’t a Tom Brady loss by any stretch. He certainly had his struggles, but yesterday Tom Brady was the New England Patriots’ best player and today, Tom Brady remains the New England Patriots’ best player.
The players surrounding Brady are average, which isn’t necessarily a new concept in New England. Coach Bill Belichick has found schemes that bring the best out of wildly average teams before. In 2013, his wildly average team reached the AFC Championship game. A wildly average Belichick team is usually much better than everyone else’s pretty good team. And as long as Belichick and Brady are together, conventional wisdom tells you that they will find a way.
There is still plenty of time to find a way in 2014. The NFL this year, unlike many years in recent memory, is wildly erratic and inconsistent. Teams many thought would challenge for a Super Bowl like San Francisco and New Orleans are in disarray. Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Bengals appear to be the best team in the league.
Patriots fans – and players for that matter – can take solace in the fact that no one seems to have it figured out at the quarter. There are problems in New England, of course. There’s a gap in their offensive line big enough to drive a tractor-trailer through, they look to the running game the same way we might turn to an episode of Seinfeld – if we don’t have anything else left, why not? – and Brady’s best receiver inexplicably remains Julian Edelman.
None of these problems are particularly easy to fix, and Monday proved that when none are addressed the result is very ugly. But the Patriots still have the best coach in the NFL and even at 37, one of the best quarterbacks too. There are reasons to be leery of what the rest of this season holds, sure.

Ukraine Turmoil Keeps Veteran Moving

NEWARK — The Devils have invited veterans to training camp. A few even have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup.
Among them is Ruslan Fedotenko, who helped the Tampa Bay Lightning win the Cup in 2004. He has played 12 seasons on various Eastern Conference teams, including the Rangers and the Islanders.
During the lockout of 2012, Fedotenko returned to his native Ukraine to play in H.C. Donbass’s inaugural season in the Kontinental Hockey League. Donbass is named for the region of eastern Ukraine that includes Donetsk, the club’s home, and Luhansk. It is the only K.H.L. team in Ukraine and one of seven K.H.L. clubs based outside Russia.
“For the fans there, it was a huge deal,” Fedotenko said. “Finally, they have a team in the K.H.L. The K.H.L. is one of the best leagues in Europe there, and it was great pride.”
When his contract with the Philadelphia Flyers ran out in 2013, Fedotenko signed a three-year contract with Donbass. He was quickly named captain, the country’s prodigal hockey son. Fedotenko helped guide the team to its first playoff berth.
“They recruited me to come back and help revive the hockey in Ukraine,” Fedotenko said, “and I felt like it was the right decision at the time.”
Few hockey players have experienced more upheaval in the last 12 months than Fedotenko.
Widespread protests erupted in Ukraine late last year when President Viktor F. Yanukovych rejected a trade agreement with the European Union in favor of a deal with Russia. Mr. Yanukovych was forced from office in February, but that led to armed rebellion by pro-Russian rebels in the east and Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula.
Violence broke out in the spring in Donetsk, 40 miles from the Russian border, as separatists took control of parts of Donetsk and Luhansk. Donbass was forced to play its remaining regular-season games on the road, and its home playoff games were moved to Slovakia.
While a K.H.L.-friendly arena was being built, Donbass’s home rink, Druzhba Arena, was looted and burned by pro-Russian gangs in May, days after Ukraine elected Petro O. Poroshenko as president. The election was supposed to bring stability, but fighting continues in Ukraine.
Donbass flirted with the idea of relocating in Eastern Europe, perhaps Prague; Minsk, Belarus; or Poprad, Slovakia, for the season, but the K.H.L. suspended the team’s operation. Players under contract were given permission to play this season wherever they chose.
“Ukraine is fighting with Russia, and we need to be playing in the K.H.L. in the Russian league?” Fedotenko said. “It was not making sense.”
He signed a tryout agreement with the Devils on Sept. 13, although they have few spots open. If he does not make the team, he hopes a different N.H.L. team will come calling for this season.
“I feel like I can play different roles,” said Fedotenko, 35. “I would love to play for New Jersey; it’s a great organization. I would be honored to play here, but if I don’t fit in their roster here, I feel like I’m not that old, and I’m in good shape and am versatile.”
Donbass plans to return to the K.H.L. next season in its new 12,000-plus-seat Kalmius Arena.
“If there’s a season there, they have my rights,” Fedotenko said of Donbass. “I don’t think there’s going to be a team there next year. If everything settles down, and if they bring the team back, then I’m still under one-year contract.”
He added: “It’s not good for the hockey, but I’m looking at people losing their homes, their loved ones, everything they have. They have a greater loss than just the team in Ukraine. I feel like, when you put it into perspective, it’s still a sport. In the end, when people are losing their lives and limbs, and when you see that, it puts everything in perspective.”

In Enemy Territory, a Farewell Comes With a Warm Embrace

Derek Jeter Plays Final Game at Fenway Park

BOSTON — Sunlight bathed the field when Derek Jeter came to bat Sunday for the last time in the major leagues. Only the home plate area, from which Jeter stared down Boston starter Clay Buchholz, was in shadows.
Jeter took a strike and a ball, smacked a ball foul and then beat a 93-mile-an-hour fastball off the plate.
The ball hung in the air for three seconds. The third baseman leapt for it and tipped it with his bare hand. The ball fell to the Fenway Park grass as Jeter raced through first base, with no throw. This was his 3,465th and final hit, a figure surpassed by only five others in history.
Jeter already had his magic moment on Thursday, in his Yankee Stadium finale, when he played shortstop for the last time and singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. He could have sat out this series, like the Red Sox great Ted Williams, who homered in his last at-bat at Fenway, in 1960, and did not even travel to New York to wrap up the year. But Jeter said he owed it to the fans here, and the teams’ rivalry, to make an appearance. He went 1 for 2 on Saturday and again on Sunday, each hit an infield single that found its way to a Boston rookie named Garin Cecchini.
But Jeter said he owed it to the fans here, and the teams’ rivalry, to make an appearance. He went 1 for 2 on Saturday and again on Sunday, each hit an infield single that found its way to a Boston rookie named Garin Cecchini.
Cecchini was barely a year old when the Yankees drafted Jeter in 1992. He grew up in Louisiana, as a shortstop, and Jeter was his favorite player. He wears No. 70, the digits of a player who still must prove himself. It happens to be the number the Yankees assigned Jeter in spring training the year before he made the majors.
“He’s a guy you respect and you kind of want to idolize because everyone liked him,” Cecchini said. “And he was a winner. He’s won a lot of games, won championships. That’s all you want to be recognized as in this sport: a winner.”
The Yankees won five titles with Jeter, and the Red Sox won three during his career. This season, neither team made the playoffs. Given the standings, and the gripping finale in the Bronx, the weekend had the feeling of a bonus track on a masterpiece album, the way the Beatles tacked “Her Majesty,” a brief aside, on to the soaring medley that otherwise closed out “Abbey Road.”
Few of the game’s grand figures go out in style. Mickey Mantle — 46 years ago to the day, also at Fenway Park — popped out to shortstop in the first inning and never played again. Yogi Berra finished with a fielder’s choice groundout for the Mets in 1965. Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth went hitless in their final games, in the 1930s.
Jeter’s last hit did not go far, but it nudged his career average up a point, to .310, where it will sit forever. He finished with 1,923 runs scored — an evocative number in the history of the Yankees, who won their first title in 1923 — and nobody ever started more games at shortstop than Jeter’s 2,660.
With two hits on Sunday, Jeter could have tied Ty Cobb’s record for most seasons of 150 hits, with 18. Manager Joe Girardi told him of the possibility on Sunday morning, he said, believing it was his obligation. Jeter was not swayed. His plan was to bat twice and take the results, whatever they were.
“I never played the game for numbers,” he said. “So why start now?”
Jeter arrived in the visitors’ clubhouse at 10:50 a.m., coming in on the team bus and chatting along the concourse with Tim Wakefield, a former Red Sox knuckleballer whom he faced more than any other pitcher. He passed souvenir stands that sold T-shirts and caps and pink foam fingers commemorating his career. He was not an enemy this weekend.
He dressed in his usual Fenway locker, the last in a row of four green stalls, closest to the tunnel leading to the field. He laughed with Brett Gardner and Chris Young and spoke with Jeff Idelson, the president of the Hall of Fame. He came across the young son of the Yankees’ pitching coach, Larry Rothschild, patting him on the shoulder and offering his standard greeting: “What’s up, buddy?”
Jeter smiled a lot during batting practice, the fans practically spilling onto the dirt track behind the cage, holding signs for him. Spike Lee and Joe Torre looked on. Jeter joined his teammates in the outfield for a silly footrace between two plodders, Mark Teixeira and Brian McCann. Teixeira won.
Soon enough came the ceremony on the field, featuring Boston sports greats like Carl Yastrzemski and Bobby Orr. Pete Frates, the former Boston College baseball captain who inspired the A.L.S. Ice Bucket Challenge, was there, too, and a singer from “The Voice” serenaded Jeter with Aretha Franklin’s “Respect.”
The gifts were modest — a pair of duck boots, a base with his number on it, a signed “RE2PECT” plate from the scoreboard, a check to his foundation — and the cheers from the fans heartfelt. Jeter had been a worthy rival.

Die Miguel Boyer

The former Minister of Economy, Finance and Trade from 1982 to 1985 in the Socialist government of Felipe González died Monday in Madrid from a pulmonary embolism
Barcelona (Writing / Agencies) .- The former Minister of Economy, Finance and Trade from 1982 to 1985 in the Socialist government of Felipe González, Miguel Boyer, died Monday in Madrid at age 75 as a result of a pulmonary embolism. The Spanish economist and politician died at the Ruber International clinic in the Spanish capital, where he admitted urgently this morning, according to sources close to the family.
The mortal remains of former minister have left the Ruber International Hospital at 14.23 pm this afternoon at the San Isidro Park Mortuary. The politician, who in February 2012 had a stroke, has admitted in critical condition this morning at the clinic where he died about an hour later, reports the same in a statement to journalists waiting at the gates of the hospital.
Just before leaving the place his widow, Isabel Preysler, and daughter Ana Boyer. The clinic also has approached the former Minister of Economy during the government of Felipe González Carlos Solchaga, who praised political figure both in his role as "very important man in Transition" as its intellectual side.
For the story are pictures RUMASA president, José María Ruiz-Mateos, attacking shouting "milk what hit you!" Boyer, who relentlessly pursued disguised Superman or inmate, among other things. From his time in the socialist government is a tight monetary policy to control inflation and the ideological clash with the other cabinet "heavyweight" Vice President Alfonso Guerra.
It is likely that in those years began its political transition, which had the inflection point his unexpected resignation of the Government in July 1985 and ended when she left Socialist ranks in 1996 to publicly support the economic program who had hitherto been his political opponents . In 2002 would be appointed to the board of the FAES, the foundation of the PP, proposed by the former Prime Minister José María Aznar, but abandoned in 2011 in another twist laying again approached the government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.
The contrasts also reached his private life, which he spent on the discretion of his marriage to the gynecologist Elena Arnedo, with whom he had two children, her liaison with the Queen "Coated paper" Isabel Preysler, with whom he has been married over 26 years and had a daughter. The couple was part of the so-called "beautiful people", people in the financial and business world that flourished in the 80s and 90s during the socialist governments such as the former governor of the Bank of Spain Mariano Rubio, president of Banesto or Mario Conde. Being part of that circle was marred by Ibercorp, financial scandal that led to the downfall of Mariano Rubio, but the case that Boyer unscathed.
Miguel Boyer Salvador was born on February 5, 1939 in San Juan de Luz (France) within a Catalan family exiled, two months before the end of the Civil War. Degree in Physics and Economics with honors from the Complutense University of Madrid, was socialist activist from the sixties, which cost him several months in prison in Carabanchel and the expulsion of the Nuclear Energy Board, where he worked as a physicist.
He joined the Socialist Executive in 1976 and was elected deputy for Jaén in the elections of March 1979, although a year and a half later resigned for professional reasons. Before that he had been an economist at the research service of the Bank of Spain, director of studies at the National Institute of Industry (INI) and Director of Planning Rio Tinto Explosives Union.
It lasted little break from politics because in December 1982 he joined the first cabinet of Felipe González, years in which the fame of cold and haughty won, and which came to be considered the most powerful minister that Government. Their adjustment policies and reforms encountered opposition guerrista apparatus and unions, advocates a more expansive economic policy towards measures that liberals believed Boyer.

Ello, the Anti-Facebook, Social Network Creates Online Buzz

In a matter of days, the new social network Ello, described as the "anti-Facebook" for its stand on privacy and advertising, has become perhaps the hottest ticket on the Internet.
Created last year as a "private" social network, Ello recently opened its doors on an invitation-only basis.
Because of the limited supply and strong demand, the invitations have been selling on eBay at prices up to $500. Some reports said Ello is getting up to 35,000 requests per hour as a result of a viral surge in the past week.
Ello appears to have caught on with its simple message which seems to take aim at frustrations of Facebook users.
"Ello doesn't sell ads. Nor do we sell data about you to third parties," the company says.
Its "manifesto" states: "We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce, and manipulate but a place to connect, create, and celebrate life. You are not a product."
Ello's policy states that the practice of collecting and selling personal data and mapping your social connections for profit "is both creepy and unethical."
"Under the guise of offering a 'free' service, users pay a high price in intrusive advertising and lack of privacy."
Based in Vermont, Ello was launched by a group of artists and programmers led by Paul Budnitz, whose previous experience include designing bicycles and robots.
Budnitz says on his page that Ello was designed to be "simple, beautiful and ad-free."
'Different politics'
Nathan Jurgenson, a social media researcher at the University of Maryland, welcomed Ello's fresh approach.
It remains unclear if Ello will end up being a flash in the pan, or if it will develop a profitable business plan.

"I love these moments of new social media when conversation explodes, moved to imagine how social media can be different, questioning core assumptions instead of just fretting and complaining all before this paint even dries," he said on his Ello page.
"Ello is getting so much attention precisely because it promises social media of a different politics. We've collectively come to the realization that the rise of social media has been accompanied by handing far too much power to far too few people, and there's energy to shake things up, even if just a bit."
Ello's rise also comes amid complaints against Facebook from the gay community that the world's biggest social network began disabling accounts using stage names instead of real names.
A San Francisco protest is planned against Facebook supporting "drag queens" who lost their Facebook accounts. Ello does not require real names.
Business plan?
Ello states it plans to remain "completely free to use," but that it could start offering some premium features for a fee.
Some question if Ello can succeed on this kind of model and keep its principles.
But former Ello collaborator Aral Balkan said Ello has already been compromised by taking $435,000 in venture capital funding.
A designer and founder of ind.ie, a privacy advocacy group, Balkan said he worked briefly for Ello but left when he learned of the venture investments.
"When you take venture capital, it is not a matter of if you're going to sell your users, you already have," says a blog post from Balkan.
"It's called an exit plan. And no investor will give you venture capital without one. In the myopic and upside-down world of venture capital, exits precede the building of the actual thing itself. It would be a comedy if the repercussions of this toxic system were not so tragic."
